John Flynn Prevocational Doctor Program

Background

As part of the 2021-22 Budget, the Australian Government announced the new John Flynn Prevocational Doctor Program (JFPDP). The aim of the program is to better streamline and coordinate medical training in regions and fund new rural primary care rotations to boost training capacity for the next generation of doctors.

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care and coordinated by the Rural Generalist Pathway WA (RGPWA) Coordination Unit on behalf of the Department of Health in Western Australia, the JFPDP commenced in January 2023 and offers rural primary care rotations to eligible WA Country Health Service (WACHS) employed prevocational doctors. The JFPDP replaced the Rural Junior Doctor Training Innovation Fund.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the JFPDP, an applicant must be:

  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident; and
  • A WACHS employed prevocational doctor in postgraduate year 1-5 at Albany Health Campus, Broome Health Campus, Bunbury Regional Hospital or Geraldton Health Campus.

Application Process

There is no separate application process to participate in the JFPDP. Eligible prevocational doctors can preference a JFPDP rotation within the term preference form provided to them by their local WACHS Medical Education/Admin team.

Participating Primary Care Organisations

There are seven primary care organisations offering rural primary care rotations through the JFPDP. These organisations offer unique and valuable rural training experiences for the participants through well-supported placements with excellent learning opportunities. They deliver excellent medical care to their patients and provide great support for the supervision and wellbeing of prevocational doctors.
