A memorable experience: Dr Sobih's first GP rotation at Panaceum Medical
In January 2024, Panaceum Medical, a private General Practice based in Geraldton, welcomed their first resident medical officer (RMO) from Geraldton Health Campus through the John Flynn Prevocational Doctor Program (JFPDP). The JFPDP commenced in 2023 and provides unique and well-supported rural primary care placements for WACHS-employed prevocational doctors. Dr Shema Sobih has provided a recap of her experience at Panaceum Medical below.
I was both thrilled and surprised to be chosen as the first RMO to complete a General Practice rotation at Panaceum Medical. This was my first rotation, and the excitement was palpable. The warm welcome party from the entire team at Panaceum Medical set the tone for an incredible experience.
I was fortunate to have some of the best supervisors who, despite their busy schedules, were always available to provide guidance and support. Dr Richard Taylor stood out with his daily check-ins and ensuring my roster met my interests and needs. My roster was incredible, providing me with diverse experiences every day. I worked in various rooms with different GPs, gaining exposure to general practice, obstetrics and gynaecology, skin cancer treatments, nursing home care, dementia management, and anaesthesia. I was also privileged to be the first to work on a heart failure project aimed at reducing hospital admissions and improving the quality of life for heart failure patients. The experience was invaluable, particularly as I plan to become a GP. Before this rotation, I wasn’t completely sure about pursuing a GP career, but now I am confident that this is what I want to do.
I was pregnant during this rotation, and the care and consideration I received to ensure I wasn't stressed was deeply touching. The kindness and support from everyone at Panaceum Medical were exceptional, and I still cherish the morning smiles and the ongoing connections I maintain with them. The camaraderie extended beyond work hours, with memorable lunch gatherings and weekend outings for swimming or coffee. I woke up every morning of this term with excitement and anticipation of learning something new. The teaching sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays were particularly enriching.
Words cannot fully express my gratitude for this rotation and the incredible mentors and friends I have gained. The farewell party, filled with lovely food and warm hugs, was a testament to the bonds formed. Thank you, Panaceum Medical, for making every day of this rotation an incredible and valuable experience. The confidence and experience I gained will undoubtedly shape my future as a competent and compassionate GP.
