Shoshanna Scott celebrated as future ambassador for rural generalism
An emerging leader in rural generalism, Shoshanna Scott has been recognised by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) as one of the 2024 President's Prize winners.
Shoshanna's connection to regional WA runs deep. After attending high school in Kununurra and Northam – and living in Broome, Geraldton, and Bunbury – Shoshanna has called Busselton home for the past two years.
Now, as a trainee on the Rural Generalist Pathway WA (RGPWA), Shoshanna has secured a place to begin her internship at Bunbury Regional Hospital in 2025.
Her journey in healthcare started as a support worker, caring for individuals in their homes and communities. Shoshanna then went on to complete a Bachelor of Nursing, working as a nurse throughout COVID-19, taking on travel contracts in Southern Cross and Kununurra, and continuing her work in community care.
"I am passionate about providing healthcare to rural Australians, especially within their communities and homes,” Shoshanna said.
Now in her final year of medical school, Shoshanna is assisting with a research project through Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME).
Following her upcoming internship, Shoshanna plans to continue working as a Resident Medical Officer in the South West and pursue her rural generalist fellowship training with ACRRM.
Shoshanna is navigating this pathway under the mentorship of Dr Adam Bancroft, RGPWA South West Director of Clinical Training.
"This is a great pathway into rural generalism as it offers support, advocacy and mentoring if you are considering this training pathway!"
While living in the South West, Shoshanna has kept busy by maintaining a veggie garden, composting, supporting local businesses, and volunteering with environmental and wildlife organisations. This includes rehabilitating native wildlife like emus, swans, shelducks, and the endangered western ringtail possum.
Her free time is spent exploring walk trails in the region and spending time with her two dogs, six rescue guinea pigs, and eight chickens.
