The Rural Generalist Pathway WA (RGPWA) Coordination Unit is making significant strides in promoting rural generalist medicine by actively participating in three major conferences this year.

The RMA24 conference, held in Darwin on the traditional lands of the Larrakia people (Garamilla country), was a landmark event organised by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA). It brought together rural health professionals from across Australia, including key stakeholders, other jurisdictional Rural Generalist Coordination Units, and RGPWA participants. A highlight for the RGPWA team was seeing RGPWA trainee Shoshanna Scott recognised by ACRRM as a future ambassador for rural generalism with the 2024 President’s Prize.

The RGPWA team also participated in the 28th Australian and New Zealand Prevocational Medical Education Forum in Darwin, and presented a poster on the crucial part that rural medical school and a rural internship play in a rural generalist’s career journey. The poster highlighted how early exposure to rural healthcare provides future doctors with essential skills and experience.

Following these events, the RGPWA team had an exhibition booth at GP24 in Perth, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ annual conference. RGPWA’s exhibition booth attracted significant interest, with the team able to highlight their support and advocacy for rural generalists and provide information on unique opportunities such as those offered through the John Flynn Prevocational Doctor Program (JFPDP). The team also participated in an expert panel, sharing insights into the JFPDP and its role in providing valuable exposure to prevocational doctors in rural general practice and rural generalist medicine.
