Discovering the heart of rural medicine: Dr Ahmed's inspiring journey
Dr Kamran Ahmed, a trainee on the Rural Generalist Pathway WA (RGPWA), developed his passion for rural medicine during his nursing degree and solidified it through his medical studies.
Dr Ahmed’s journey with RGPWA began early in his Rural Clinical School year in Derby when he decided to pursue a career in rural generalist medicine. Reflecting on his experiences, he said, “My time in Derby really opened my eyes to rural medicine and the significance of the rural generalist role.”
Currently serving as an intern at Broome Health Campus with the WA Country Health Service, Dr Ahmed embraces every opportunity to enhance his skills and deepen his commitment to delivering high quality healthcare. This includes meeting with Dr Yehuda ‘Hoods’ Levy, RGPWA Kimberley Director of Clinical Training and rural generalist anaesthetist in Broome, for career navigation advice and support.
“Hoods has been an incredible support, offering a wealth of insights into the diverse pathways available in Kimberley medical training,” Dr. Ahmed said. “Hoods ensures we can turn our generalist aspirations into reality.”
Dr Ahmed has a particular interest in hearing health and middle ear disease, especially as they affect rural and remote communities. He aims to specialise as a generalist focused on understanding and managing middle ear disease in the Kimberley. His plans include completing GP training and advancing his skills in Ear Health/ENT and Emergency Medicine, all within the Kimberley region.
The appeal of rural practice lies in its rich social capital, the autonomy it offers, and the chance to form genuine connections with the community. When not working, Dr Ahmed immerses himself in the local lifestyle, enjoying camping, fishing, and taking part in events like The Gibb Challenge and Lake Argyle Swim.
Dr Ahmed enjoys being outdoors crabbing and camping!
