Encouraging our next generation of rural generalists in the Midwest
JMOs in the Midwest region hearing about rural generalist careers.
Recently, the ‘GP or not to GP’ Information Night was held in Geraldton for more than 40 junior medical officers (JMOs) who are considering pursuing a career in general practice or rural generalist medicine. The event, hosted in collaboration with ACRRM, RACGP and the RCSWA Regional Training Hubs, gave a valuable opportunity for JMOs to hear directly from practicing GPs and rural generalists in the Midwest region. The evening featured an open conversation about the intricacies of the speciality and a discussion addressing the transition from hospital to community practice. Attendees also had the chance to voice their questions to a panel of GPs who were there to bust commonly believed GP myths. Dr Ruth Highman, RGPWA Midwest Director of Clinical Training, shared her insights into the rural generalist experience and introduced the rural generalist pathway to the event’s attendees. Her presentation highlighted the unique opportunities and rewards of working in rural and regional settings. Continuing her advocacy, Dr Highman delivered a dedicated session on rural generalist medicine during a JMO education session at Geraldton Hospital on Wednesday 14 May 2025. Approximately 20 JMOs attended the session, where she outlined the various college pathways available for those interested in rural generalist training. The session was well-received, with attendees praising the clarity and depth of information provided.
